Technically, this post is more than just a weekend rewind…it’s an 11 day rewind, as we’ve been gone for the past week and a half to work at the State Fair.

Yes, we took vacation time to go and work at the fair because we’re crazy people, and because we have high hopes of using our earnings to help pay for new kitchen cabinets next year.

Anyway, here’s a little look at what the past days were spent doing. (These photos were taken in years past, but they still apply, trust me.)

It’s a lot of hard work and long hours. Our bodies ache at the end of each day and the beginning of the next. Still, we have a family there, and it’s really the only reason we’ve continued to give our time to this exhausting week or work.

Side note: I look pretty much exactly the same as I did 5 years ago. Good grief. No wonder people used to think I looked older and now they think I look younger than my age. Ah well.

So, the last 11 days were full of hard work and 13 hour days on hard concrete floors. Our legs were hurting. Our feet were hurting. Our backs were hurting. Technically, those things are still hurting, but we’re both back to our desk jobs now.

All in all, we were blessed to have the opportunity to work with some wonderful people…

…while using our vacation time to earn some extra income instead of spending our cash. Hello future kitchen, here’s looking at you!

Oh, and as part of our fair adventure, we got boxed in in the parking lot one night. That was sure fun.

And our living room is still a mess because I’m not the world’s fastest unpacker and put-er-away-er.

In other news, I’ve spent the last four weeks NOT running. Yup. In the middle of marathon training, I’ve hit a pretty decent sized speed bump. While I’m not certain because we didn’t want to pay for x-rays (that were almost certain to not show anything, thus we’d also have to pay for a bone scan–not cheap!), I’m fairly certain I had a stress fracture in my shin.

My goal of finishing the marathon injury free is officially bust. So now the goal is to just finish, no matter how much I have to walk.

Although depending on how the next 11 weeks go (time remaining before the marathon), the marathon may not happen. I certainly don’t want to do anything to seriously injure myself, although it will be a big disappointment if I’m not able to finish at all…so we’ll see. I’m just trying to find a way to see some sort of purpose in all of this right now.

Wyatt’s dealing with some pain of his own this week (not that I have physical pain from my leg anymore, other than some lingering back issues from the fair). As the head cook at the Beef House this year, he spent a lot of his time scrubbing the grill with a wire brush to keep it clean enough to cook on. His hands are swollen and sore as a result, so we’re both taking it pretty easy.

The most exciting update to give you is in regards to our garden, which actually fared quite well on its own while we were gone.

Healthy Squash

We have enough cucumbers to make another giant batch of pickles (super excited about that!) and we’ve enjoyed some of our first big tomatoes!

We’ll be back later with another garden update–we have some work to do out there and we’ve had some exciting harvests.

In the meantime, tell me about your weekend, or the past week. Are you going back to school? Spending your first hours as a teacher in a classroom of your own? Gardening? Do you have an injury? Let’s discuss!
