When Hubs and I were at Home Depot Tuesday night, I grabbed a bottle of light blue spray paint to add one more little herb container to my kitchen window sill garden.

I had another small terracotta pot (that I found in my parents’ garden shed) so I took it out to the grass to spray paint it. (I also found a small, plastic, fake terracotta pot to paint, so I grabbed it at the same time.)

I also grabbed a few new scrap lumber blocks to prop them up since Hubs used the ones I had been using for the free fix for the porch post caps.

Painting Pots

I chose the Aqua color, in the same Rustoleum, Paint + Primer spray paint I prefer, but unfortunately, this time, it didn’t give me the coverage I was expecting. For some reason, the finish turned out all bumpy and powdery.

I thought maybe it was too hot in the sun, so I moved into the garage to see if the environment was a cause.

Sadly, still no luck. It ended up looking, and feeling pretty bumpy no matter what I tried. I even read the can twice to make sure it wasn’t some sort of special, literal, powder blue. Nope.

Aqua Spray Paint

Wyatt thinks I may not have shaken it enough. (I shook it the normal amount that I usually shake spray cans.) I’m wondering if it was just a bad can (or a bad color) for some reason. Weird.

Powdery Spray Paint Finish

Anyway, this morning, I decided to see if I could smooth out the powdery coverage any so I sanded it lightly with some fine grain sand paper. It felt quite a bit smoother after that, so I’m going to say it’s good enough. At least for now.

And it looks pretty good with the other colors in the kitchen window sill.

New Herb Container

Oh, and you’ll notice the green onions are still going strong. (The ones in water that is, I ended up tossing the ones in the dirt.)

You can’t even see the bumps from farther away. And I like the three different colors, even though I originally wanted them all the same color (but didn’t have enough leftover yellow spray paint to make that happen.)

I haven’t decided exactly what I want to plant in this new pot yet. I’m thinking basil, but mint is tempting… any other suggestions for what I should go with? I’d love to hear what kitchen herbs you think are “Essentials” for a window sill garden.

8 Thoughts on “Powder Blue”

  • Ooh! I love that colour blue. Strange about the can – I’ve never had that happen before. It kind of looks like it got mixed in with their textured paints.

As for window herbs, I have none! But I do have planters right outside my back door with rosemary, parsley, mint and some basil. Basil is easy to grow and lends itself to a lot of cooking…but then so does mint! Sounds like you just need a 5th pot 😉

  • funny thing…I’m having trouble with powdery spray paint….and guess what? It is the same brand and type of paint! I am painting a chandelier! ugh

  • It just isn’t mixed enough. Unless you’ve just used it, it really does need to be shaken for 1-2 minutes to get all of the powder mixed in. I use that brand a lot. Love the color!

    • Thanks for the input—I shook it a lot so I’m wondering if it just sat too long on the shelf. And I use Rustoleum a lot as well, so I’ll be sure to give them another try–I think they have great spray paint! Thanks!
