Alright guys, remember back when I said I had the winter project blues because it was cold out and I didn’t know which projects to take on?
Well, I’m leaving this up to you to help me decide which project should I take on first (meaning right now)?
First, my nightstand:
A couple years ago, my great-grandparents’ house caught on fire and burned. They didn’t live there anymore, they died when I was young, but the house was still there on my dad’s farm and used as a rental house. After the fire, the renters went through and got all their belongings that they wanted that were salvageable. Then, after they left, we went through and got anything else (there wasn’t much) we wanted before it was torn down.
I saved this little guy, who became my nightstand.
He might not actually have belonged to my great-grandparents, although my mom thinks he might have because she can remember him being in their living room, if not a very similar piece. Still, he was a part of that house when it burned, so he’s special to me. I always planned to paint him, although I kind of started to like the rustic, messy, half burned look after awhile. You can see the places where there were books or papers that protected the surface.
And I had to strip the veneer off the sides because it was too badly damaged. Not sure what to do with that…
The other project is an old filing cabinet from my parents’ basement. LOVE the possibilities down there!
The top is scuffed, but otherwise, it’s in good shape.
I want to spray paint it, of course, but I’m not sure where it will go. If it’s cute enough, it might get to sit out. Otherwise, it will join this one in the closet. (This one will probably also be getting a makeover.)
Both projects are fairly stand-alone, meaning they won’t tear up an entire room or mushroom into something bigger. Hopefully. I’ll be doing both of these eventually, maybe even this winter, I’m just not sure which one I want to do first.
So… let me hear your ideas. Comments please!
Spray paint is all good and then you could make a cute design on it … also, I have a book of one-yard patterns that includes a really cute filing cabinet “cover” jacket thing … it just basically goes over the cabinet and has hooks on one side so you can open the front and get into the cabinet. In case for some reason you decided not to spray paint, you could borrow it. But I know how much you love spray paint. I think the filing cabinet painted would probably be a quicker/easier project cause you’d just have to separate it and tape it off possibly … but the nightstand I am excited to see what you will do with … maybe you could even just sand the sides and stain them but leave part of the burn marks on the top? Restain but let the dark parts show so it still has that look? I couldn’t tell if it was wood beneath the veneer you had to remove and you could stain it or it you’d have to paint it … or maybe paint part and leave part wood/burned/stained? Don’t know how that might look either.
Fun stuff ahead it looks like!
Yea, the fabric is interesting, I’d like to see it for an idea. And yes, the night stand has so many possibilities. I’m thinking I’ll be painting at least part of it…just not sure a color…maybe red or white…and probably leave it rustic/let the damage show some–that’s a good idea- thanks!
The nightstand gets my vote! I think you will get more gratification out of it since it sits beside your bed and you use it daily vs. the cabinet which will probably end up in a closet.
Very good point… Thanks!
I agree. Nightstand! You will see it more, and it gets more “use” at least visually. 🙂
Again, good point! Thanks for the vote!
