It’s finally getting colder (in our part of the country) now and that means I pretty much live in boots and usually tights or leggings, but sometimes skinny jeans.
Except during the week during the day when I don’t leave the house, of course, because then I live in sweats or workout clothes.
Anyway, back to my original topic, it’s boot season, and I’ve been seeing these cute boot socks all over the place. I thought about trying to buy some, or to ask my mother in law to knit some for me, but then, I saw an idea on PinterestΒ to make them out of an old sweater sleeve.
Now, since we don’t really wear sweaters very much, we don’t have any old sweaters, so I picked up a white one and a mustard yellow one from a nearby thrift store for a couple bucks a piece and went to work figuring out how to make it work.
The yellow one was sort of cute in its own way, even though it was WAY too big for me.
The white one, not so much.
The first step was removing the buttons from the yellow sweater because I wanted to save them.
Since I wasn’t really following a tutorial for this and it seemed simple enough, I made a quick guestimate of how long I’d want it (as short as possible with enough room to double it over to make a cuff and not risk slipping out from the top of the boot) and made my first cut.
I did this by putting the sleeve on my leg while it was still attached to the sweater. It’s a bit awkward but I wanted to make sure I made it long enough.
I actually could have made these a little shorter but it’s ok.
Then I just measured the other side to match and snipped it off, too.
I tried them on to make sure they worked, and yes, they did.Β Easy as pie so far.
Then I cuffed them over to what looked about right, and added a button (from the front of the sweater–yay for reusing as much as possible right?) to hold the cuff in place.
I also sewed all the way around the bottom edge because I was afraid it would unravel since the sweater I used was a particularly loose weave and it seemed to be a bit unsteady when I was pulling it on and off.
Then you just slide them on under your boots and you’re good to go!
Here’s the yellow ones over black tights, as they should be:
I also did this with the white sweater and a black one that was in our garage sale box in the basement, so now I have three! Plus, the white one and the black one were a much tighter knit, so I didn’t even need to sew the bottom ends of those since they won’t show inside my boots. I always could do that later, if it seemed they weren’t holding up very well.
Here’s a pic of the black ones over gray tights. Hubs and I went to an ugly sweater Christmas party this weekend.
What do you guys think, silly or cute? Have you guys made anything similar? I’d love to see a picture, so tweet me or send me and email or post a comment with a link to your blog!
I did the same thing! Mine are white. So I obviously think they are cute. π Love the buttons sewn back on to the yellow ones.
Thanks! I like them, too. Glad to know someone’s on my side!
I love the cuffs. They look great on you and they definitely are your style. Dad said “I thought I knew Wyatt, but that pic puts it all in question”.
Ha! Thanks. I’ll pass on the note.
It was an UGLY Sweater Party. I wouldn’t wear this by choice.
Those look great! I especially love that you re-used the buttons from the sweater. Very good idea! I might be trying this in the future. I can understand why you didn’t add the actual “sock” part at the bottom, some of my boots get too tight with tights and knee socks all fitting into the already boot, so it makes total sense to me to leave that part off!
Thanks! I think they make a lot of sense, too. Plus, since they make my boots tighter and warmer at the top, I find that my legs are warmer, even if my feet aren’t. Good luck with yours!
I think they’re cute! Although, I would recommend not wearing black with brown π You should make gray cuffs for black boots though! π
Ha! Thanks for the suggestion, but I can’t agree. I wear my brown boots with everything and love them. Hubs will TOTALLY agree with you on this point, though.
If you can’t tell, I’m catching up on your posts… I actually pinned something like this on Pinterest a while back, too. Love them! Good job! And personally, I think they do help keep you warm! π
For sure! And thanks! You should make some—it’s easy!
