It’s been a little bit longer than I’d hoped it would be since I shared our guestroom makeover reveal, here, but I’m finally ready to share the cost breakdown of what we spent on this room for all the projects we completed in that space. I just shared the cost breakdown for our nursery, here, so I figured now was as good a time as any to share this one, too.

Just to recap, we started with a room that looked like this:

Messy Basement Guest Room Full of Stuff

…and now it looks like this:

Guest Room Decor

Guestroom bed with curtains and nightstands

Of course, to be fair, it technically started out looking like this before we bought the house:

guest room basement before gym

(Those big rubber mats are why we have giant stains on the floor…yay…)

…and then, it was our chair room:

So, without any more crazy trips down memory lane, here’s the breakdown of what we spent on this room. I’ve linked to various projects throughout if you’d like more info on any of these projects.

Ceiling:

  • Scraping popcorn – $0
  • Re-mudding ceiling – $0
  • Repainting ceiling – $0
  • Other supplies (breathing masks) -$5

Walls:

  • Primer – $0
  • Supplies (rollers, paint trays, etc.) – $3
  • Paint – $16

Curtains

  • Rod and curtain hooks
    • Purchased on sale from Target- $40
  • Curtains
    • Purchased on sale from Target and cut in half to make 4 panels – $15

Furniture:

  • Bed and frame
    • Given to us by my parents  $0
  • Headboard
    • Fabric, batting, and staples purchased on sale from Joann’s to cover old door – $25
  • Dressers
    • Already owned – $0
  • Bucket chair
    • Already owned – $0

Accessories:

Total: $233

A total room renovation for less than $250?

I’ll take that as a serious win. Of course, it’s not as impressive considering we already had a bunch of the supplies we needed for the ceiling and walls, and we didn’t have to buy any furniture since we were reusing things we already had…but still. I’m pleased.

Guest Room Bed Through Door

And, it makes me feel even better about our nursery project budget (which you can find, here) since we were doing both of those rooms at the same time, which can take a serious toll on our savings account.

I’d like to spend a little money sometime in the future finishing the upgrades to this room. We still need a little more artwork and other wall decor…and I’d like to have some new furniture eventually. I’m not sure what I’d invest in first, though…ideas?

What do you think would the first pieces of furniture to add or upgrade in the guest room…the chair?

2 Thoughts on “Our Guestroom Makeover on a Budget – Cost Breakdown”

  • Maps would be a neat addition for a guest room since people are travelling, and I bet you could get some for very cheap or free in magazines or printing them. I think the chair is pretty fun, actually. 🙂 We didn’t really just sit down there anyway when we visited and used the guest room, but I always think chairs like that look comfy to sit in.
