Popping in today to share a little nursery wall art update and a tutorial for a DIY hanging air plant holder made from straws! Yep, straws.
I’ve spent many, many hours in Emma’s room, rocking her and nursing her in the chair. As I sit, I sometimes scroll on my phone, or try to do some work, or daydream, or fight sleep (sometimes I do fall asleep), or re-style the wall above her dresser in my mind. And then, slowly, I turned that daydream into a reality and here we are:
The banner is from Oak Tree Market (it’s an old style that’s no longer available but her other designs are also awesome and also affordable–plus, her shop supports families in adoption fundraising efforts, which is also a cause close to my heart).
I’m still not sure about the items on the shelf. It seems off for me. Maybe not “fun” enough for a little kid’s room. Maybe too cluttered for my current minimalism efforts. Maybe just not the right items since these were all pulled from other places around our house. But, I do really like the change in the hanging plant holders and the new banner.
Here’s what the wall looked like before, if you need a before and after:
I love that this is a bit less “matchy” with only using one of the copper plant holders, and honestly, the larger one had a lot of paint flaking off of it, so I switched it out for this black one instead. I figure it’s not great to have paint flaking down onto the baby’s head while changing diapers, right?
Speaking of the DIY hanging air plant holder, I haven’t shared how I made those, so here’s a quick tutorial, in photo form. It was really easy and used a bunch of the plastic straws we had leftover from the big bag we bought at Ikea.
Just a note, these are NOT bendy straws. It won’t look as nice if you use those unless you cut that part off.
Then, I spray painted them copper. Well, technically I spray painted them gold first because I was planning to hang them in our bedroom. But…that never happened and I ended up repainting them to match the copper accents in Emma’s room.
So, there you have it, two years after a random ladies’ night craft project at our church and I had the perfect little accent for this wall. I love that it’s so light that it doesn’t take much to anchor it to the shelf, and if it fell (it won’t!) it wouldn’t hurt Emma. Originally, I was going to hang these over the crib, but decided I liked them better here for ease of caring for them. Plus, she likes looking up at them during diaper changes.
What do you think of our DIY hanging air plant holder? Anyone else have air plants? Fake air plants? One of mine is real (for now–unless it dies!) and the other is fake. Can you tell which is which?
This is an (affiliate) link to the fake ones we have and I think they are pretty good replicas. (I cut the long stem off and just sat it in the holder.)
And this is the link to the real ones we got. (I’ve killed all but one, but that one still looks good…for now! And the customer service was great! He sent me a replacement and was really nice and helpful when one arrived damaged the first time I ordered.)
Now that this wall is “finished”with our hanging air plant holders, a cute banner, and I can turn my nursing musings to the other blank walls in here. I am trying to add texture and style without complicating the more minimal look. I want it to feel fun and feminine too. Nothing like a challenge for my sleep-deprived brain, right? Any suggestions or favorite wall art sources?
