I’m fond of saying, “…back when I was young and dumb…” to refer to decisions and choices and habits I had when I was younger.

Younger meaning a couple years ago.

Maybe back to high school age…but still, it wasn’t all that long ago…

Either way, I joke that I’m older and wiser now.

And in a way, I guess I am. Hubs and I have grown up a lot in the last few years. We’ve made big decisions, we’ve planned a wedding, graduated, gotten jobs, got married, gotten more jobs, decided to quit jobs, selected and rented an apartment, managed a budget, learned to live together, moved away from friends and family, lost loved ones, gained new friends…

…it’s been a big year.

So, yes, we are wiser now.

But we still have a lot to learn.

We’re currently in the process of selecting a house and we are realizing just how hard it is to make these decisions that will affect us, majorly, for the next several years of our life. It’s a big commitment.

And it’s hard.

In the end, I guess we’ll never really “know” what to do.

But we will know all we can know.

That we need to talk about it, think about it, pray about it, and talk about it some more. And when we can be at peace with decision, we’ll know it’s right.

Right?

What about you? What sort of things do you “know?” And how do you know that you know you know?

(Awesomeness bonus points if you know what that reference is.)

6 Thoughts on ““K”nowing what to do…”

  • This post hits home right now. The husband and I just bought a new house in a different state, and are getting ready for a huge life change. I think that life is, in some ways, intuitive. You never necessarily “know” but…. you know. We literally flew 4,000 miles away to look at real estate for 2 days and I was unimpressed, or only mildly interested until I walked into one particular house- when I walked into it, I just KNEW that this was the place I could see myself and my husband building a life, and he felt the same. We put an offer on it that day.

Do we necessarily “know” that we made the right decision? Of course not. But it feels right, which is the most that I can think you can hope for from a decision like that (of course, assuming you have researched enough to feel confident that you are picking the right neighborhood, etc for you). Good luck!

    • That would be a huge change! It would be a big decision for sure! It’s great you knew so soon that your house was “the one!” Good luck in this next phase of life. And thanks for the encouragement! And for taking the time to leave a comment!

  • When it comes to buying a house, I knew that I knew when I walked in the door. It’s definitely an anxiety-producing process. There are must-haves and can’t-stands and you have to do your best to know what’s on each of your lists…but sometimes there’s that moment when you walk in and you just KNOW! Wishing you guys the best as you choose! There will be so much more to know when you own a house!! 🙂 FUN!

    • Thanks! We thought we’d found our first house…but couldn’t come to an agreement with the sellers so we’re back to the beginning again. That’s okay thought, because we have some time to find the right one. Thanks for the encouragement!

  • Buying a house is very exciting and very stressful. My husband and I looked for almost a year before we bought our first home a year and a half ago. We had an excellent realtor who was very patient with us, so that helped a lot. If you’re in a position to have close friends or family members come scope out a house you’re thinking about that helps a lot. They all bring years of experience and knowledge (in vastly different areas if you’re lucky) and care about you. Ultimately it has to be something you’re both equally happy and comfortable with. Good luck and best wishes!
