We added a few plants to the garden this past weekend so we’re another few steps closer to getting it all the way planted and ready to go.
We stripped out the sod from the back end of the garden, which was anything but fun.
They’ll be a post about that later, so I won’t go into too much detail. However, you can see we added one watermelon and one eggplant. I think we have room for a couple more, so we’re going to grab a couple more the next time we’re out.
And did you see the other little surprise?
It’s no secret that I love daisies and hate the messy overgrown trees/plants/weeds on our neighbor’s side of the fence, so this was a toss up. In the end, I’m glad I allowed the daisies to stay. They just bring happiness, even if they are a weed in my neighbor’s yard.
Also, I thought I’d share that our seeds are doing pretty well so far. Look at our green beans!
And the radishes, beets, onions, lettuce and carrots are all up too!
Even the asparagus starts have popped up a tiny bit!
Plus, we have a banana pepper that’s getting pretty big!
Exciting!
This has been a long process since we’re doing it in stages, but so far, I’m super pleased with our results and I can’t wait to see how the garden does this summer.
You’ll also notice we also added a layer of cedar mulch to the garden beds to help hold in moisture (which isn’t really a problem right now).
Cedar is also supposed to help keep pests away…and since we seem to already have some insect problems, I figure we’ll take any help we can get.
Plus, it will help control weeds, which is also nice since no one likes weeding, am I right?
(We added a layer of Preen weed control underneath the mulch to help with the weeds even more.)
Oh, and we made some milk jug watering cans. My mom found the idea on Pinterest.
We still have a few more steps to accomplish but we’re getting close and I think we’ve talked about this enough that you guys might have started to lose track of everything we’ve done/are doing so here’s a little list:
Build raised garden bedsSet beds in the ground, add dirt, compostPlant seeds/startsBuild/make/buy containers for asparagus and plant startsAdd bird deterentsAdd DIY plant labelsAdd preen and mulch to control weeds- Strip sod from around the beds (partially done)
- Add preen, weed barrier, mulch around the garden beds
- Plant berries, watermelon, other plants in the ground
- Add bird netting to protect berries from birds
- Add edging around the outside of the beds
- Touch-ups, other additions as needed
As you can see, we still have a ways to go. It’s the project that keeps on projecting! What projects do you have the keep building on themselves, getting bigger and bigger?
It looks great! A couple things… the watermelon will get huge (the plant i mean). You won’t want that near your other plants. The asparagus is usually planted in propietary beds since it is sort of like a perennial flower. It will regrow over and over and will spread out. It will take over your whole bed. I can’t wait to see how all your lovely plants do!
Thanks for the comment! We know the watermelon will get big…It’s all on it’s own on one side so we’re hoping we can make that work… Also, the asparagus has it’s own container, so we’re actually hoping it will take over and spread out! Thanks for the comment! We’re also excited to see how everything does!
