Last week I replanted some store-bought green onions in hopes they would grow again for another harvest.

Well, I promised an update, and I’m back with a report: It Works!

Here’s how the onions looked four days after I replanted them, on Sunday:

Wow!

It seems like the ones in water are growing a little faster than the ones in the dirt, but they are both doing really well!

They kept on growing after that, too. And we used a bunch (about 2-3 inches of the tallest ones) on Monday to make the marinade and flavor the vegetables for our grilled chicken dinner.

Here’s what they look like tonight, after having grown back for a couple of days after their first major trim since the replant. They’ve pretty much regrown (and more!) everything we trimmed on Monday!

I still think the ones in the water seem to be growing faster, if only a little bit, but I wonder if the ones of the soil will last longer with better quality. Although they also might mold and die faster. We’ll just have to see how it goes I guess.

So far, I’ve only watered the ones in soil once, after I watered them heavily when I planted them. I just check to see if the soil feels dry to the touch or if I can see water in the bottom rock portion of the jar and add water accordingly. For the ones in water, I’ve changed the water twice since planting them.

Don’t worry, I’ll keep you all posted as we try to keep these growing as long as possible.

Have I inspired any of you guys to regrow your own green onions? They are a great way to keep some “fresh” herbs on the counter or window sill (if you don’t have a lot of space) and it’s so easy to snip them off and add some major flavor to all kinds of dishes!
