On Friday, we had to give our tomato plants a big haircut. It had been pretty windy all day and since they were quite a bit taller than their cages (they’ve gone crazy!) they finally fell over.
Oops. Sorry for not being supportive enough, guys.
(Warning, blurry cell photos below!-Sorry!)
Not many of the branches were really broken, but we decided it would only get worse if we didn’t give them a significant trim. So, we got out the scissors and started snipping.
At first, we tried to not cut any that had a lot of little unripe tomatoes on them, but eventually, it because clear we needed to, and even though I was unhappy about it, we got them cut back to a decent size.
This is me, caught in mid-pout.
It ended up being a pretty sad amount of trimmings.
For some of the heavier stalks that still aren’t supported by the cage, we used some rags to tie them up and give them some extra support.
But we still have lots of green tomatoes and lots or blooms, so I’m encouraged we’ll still have plenty.
We had a pretty decent harvest that night though, which was encouraging.
And today, there are plenty of other tomatoes that are getting pretty ripe.
Including this big beauty!
Stay tuned for more garden updates, guys. There’s big things a growing out there! In the meantime, give me an update on something you’re working on!
My mouth is watering. We have one green one.
Good luck!
Impressive tomato plants!! My container tomato plants are thriving but I don’t think they get enough sun to produce much fruit. I would be totally pout-y if I had to cut off a bunch of vines. I keep hoping that one day I’ll go out there and they will be going crazy with big, red fruit. Still waiting…
Good luck! The sun is important, but you can also try Miracle Gro, or some other fertilizer. A lot of people swear by Miracle Gro for tomatoes…but I’m sure there’s an organic version that would help too, if you’re trying to do this organically.
