Today is National Pi Day, did you know that?

As in, March 14, 3-14, for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, or approximately 3.14 (rounded).

Now, the reason I think this day is cool is actually two-fold. One, any excuse to celebrate pie is noteworthy. And two, Hubs and I had some good times in high school while hanging out at Math Club events and competitions.

Translation: We were math nerds.

Translation: He was a math nerd, I was a good student who liked math a normal amount but went to everything the club did in order to spend time with my calculator-minded boyfriend.

See his shirt here? I had 3 of those, a black, green, and pink one! We were so young…and yes, so in love. Oh, and so, so cool, huh?

Anyway, it’s Pi Day. And since it’s customary to celebrate this day by eating pie (aren’t homophones fun?), I wanted to celebrate by adding a little pie to our house. It’s been lacking in that area, up until now.

Flashback to last week when Hubs was out of town and my mom and sister and I went to visit my grandma for the day. While we were there, she found an old book, quite worn and torn, but still, cute, and as the family book-freak, word-nerd, and writer, she sent it home with me.

Isn’t it adorable? Dirty (covered in dust from the attic (or the basement) and smelling a little musty, or mouse-y…, but still, super-worth saving, I think. It did have a ton of writing on the inside (and the cover) which is usually a deal breaker for me when selecting old books. (One name is okay, even an endearing messy child’s writing is sometimes okay, scribbles on the cover…eh…)

My original idea was to cut out a few pages and frame them in our kitchen. It was a book of recipes, right? Albeit, slightly inedible ones, but still, kitchen-y enough for our frame wall in there.

However, as I sat down to choose a page to cut out, I read the forward, and the dedication, and my heart swelled up a few sizes with love for this forgotten treasure and I had to put down my scissors. It was just too cute. I mean, how could I separate the recipes from this touching note at the beginning that reminded me so much of simpler times and the innocence and creativity of playing outside as kid?

I mean, are you reading this? Just adorable, right?

So, I called my mom and explained my dilemma. And being the super smart mom that she is, she said, “Why don’t you photocopy it?”

Um…duh?

So, as I lavished praise on her for her brilliant idea, I ran to the office and got to copying.

This is the page I chose.

And then, in another stroke of genius, I ran downstairs (Yes, ran, I was pretty excited about this little book project) and got some colored pencils to color in the illustration.

Even cuter now, huh?  This is my favorite recipe on the page. “Make it gloppier” made me laugh out loud when I first read it. In fact, I’m still chuckling a bit.

After the coloring was finished, I stole a frame from another print that was hanging in my office. (I didn’t have anything in my unused stash that would work) and cut out some scrapbook paper to use as a mat.

Time for a little tape to hold the print in place.

Then I placed the glass back in the frame and it was ready to hang up.

Using the technique and trick I used for the gallery wall when I hung it up the first time, I grabbed a hammer, nail and some toothpaste.

Pretty soon, up he went!

I’m really loving how cute this little guy is. Super adorable and fun.

It was hard to get a picture with no glare since we have so much sunlight today (nope, not complaining, just explaining!) but I think you can still get a good look here.

And no, the irony of the three trays of “mud pies” on my dining room table isn’t lost on me. Let’s hope those seeds grow into something more edible, eh?

So tell me how you celebrated Pi Day. If you haven’t there’s still time to head to Perkins and buy a slice of cherry, or apple, or chocolate creme if that’s your fancy. Heck, there’s still time to make one yourself! Or you can just find something adorable and pie-like to hang on your walls and celebrate calorie-free!

Confession: The little pie picture in no way means I’m celebrating this day calorie-free. In fact, Hubs just went to play disc golf with some buddies, so I may make a pie and eat the whole thing myself while he’s gone!

5 Thoughts on “Easy As Pie”

  • Think about how much of a Pi Day it will be on 3/14/15 in just two years! We’ll have to make extra pies to celebrate. I like the new picture and wish I’d thought ahead about making a pie. Maybe tomorrow? I don’t make pie very often … I’m better at cookies … we’ll see.

  • We celebrated Pi Day with our wonderful “In Laws”. Enjoyed the company and conversation. We are very blessed! So glad our son chose you!
