Last night Hubs and I went to the church where I volunteer to help staff an event. We had a good time wrapping presents for little kids and just doing something different than our usual schedule of staying in. (Not that I’m complaining, I LIKE staying in.)
But afterward? We did something even better. WAY better. We drove around and looked at the Christmas lights in a neighborhood close to where we live. I noticed them as we were leaving the church and said something like, “Oooh, look!” And Wyatt, knowing me as well as he does, went straight instead of turning and then we spent fifteen to twenty minutes driving around slowly in a strange neighborhood. The cops didn’t come, so we must not have been tooย suspicious.
And you know what? It was the most fun date I’ve had in awhile. It’s not that I don’t like the other things we do. I just love Christmas lights.
I think of it this way, December is the easiest and cheapest dating time for him. Buy me dinner (or make it!) (or make it together!) and then take me for a drive. I’ll be happy. I promise.
And what does this teach us as newlyweds? To take advantage of the cheap date opportunity and do all our nights out in that month to save money? Maybe, but also to not be afraid to do the things that make us happy. Because is it lame to love Christmas lights and drive around random neighborhoods making comments about the snowman that’s tipping his hat and being super excited every time we see those purple LED lights? Yup. But do we care? Nope.
What about you? What are your Christmas favorites? No matter how cheesy!
I love traditions and I love them in order. Thanksgiving while I am cooking, that is when the Christmas tunes start. Then I need my tree up and we decorate so I can start putting gifts under it! My man knows I am so in love with traditions, and Christmas, and lights, so he surprised me with a trip to “Southern Lights” which is miles of Christmas lights with themes and they move. So fun! Our new tradition, since last year, is to decorate a gingerbread house and watch Elf. ๐
What a great tradition! That sounds like my kind of place! And I like the idea to make a gingerbread house as well, how fun! Thanks for your comment!
I love the lights too. Wyatt must remember me making them all ride around Sedalia and look at all the lights. I also seem to remember one Christmas that we took you 2 and Jack and a date to dinner and them I made John drive around and look at lights!
There is a drive thru light “park” at Longview Lake in Lee’s Summit that is supposed to be very nice. I think it is Free too!
I so want to go!
And I remember that night, too. I was super nervous because it was the first time I’d hung out with your whole family. Fun memories.
I love looking at Christmas lights too! The other thing I like that is a little cheesy is that I want a Christmas mug. My cousing Jan has one that she brings out every Christmas season and only uses it for Christmas. I want one!! ๐ Great item to find at a yard sale – I am on the look out!
My mom has Christmas mugs we only used to use for a couple of months. It’s fun! Too bad we don’t have room in our cabinets for more mugs!
I love driving around to look at Christmas lights too! The hubby and I did that earlier this week. ๐
It’s such a simple pleasure! I want to go again so we don’t miss any good ones! Thanks for the comment!
Those kind of dates are my favorite too! It’s funny how the most simple things can be the most special… I guess when you are lucky to married to your best friend- any time together is awesome! So happy for you ๐
Thanks! And I so agree, I don’t care if we’re just chilling at home, he’s my favorite person to hang out with!
