When we moved to the suburbs, I had the idea that we wouldn’t have as many bugs and critters and other outdoor issues. Except maybe a dog that barks all night in our neighbor’s backyard or something.

As it turns out though, we’ve had more icky insects here than I’ve ever seen where we lived in the country! We have lots of ground spiders in the garden, frogs, ants, wasps, bees, mosquitoes, and more outside. We’ve had our fair share of problems inside, too. And once, we saw a snake out back while Wyatt was mowing–it was small, but still, it counts.

We’ve also had critters, like the two possums and one groundhog we’ve had living in the hole under out front porch at various times over the past year.

Hungry GroundHogCurrently, we’re working on getting rid of the wasp population that seemed to have built up in our backyard over night a week or so ago.

We hit them hard with the Raid the night of my birthday when we were out there hanging out with some friends. Hubs even found and destroyed two nests.

We’ve still seen several flying around though, of various kinds, so we know they aren’t gone for good yet. Oh, and on Wednesday, I saw a hornet on our patio–we had a few of those last year until Wyatt got them with the Raid.

So, we picked up this WHY trap at the store this week, in hopes of just trapping a bunch of these pests all at once.

WHY Wasp Trap

It had a bunch of pieces and parts to assemble.

But, I managed to put it together pretty much on my own, without spilling any of the “bait” on myself.

Luckily, there were instructions.

Then, we headed outside to hang it up. It was dark out, so this is the best we could do, photo-documentation-wise, at the time.

Here’s how it looks a few days later in the sunlight.

And no, it isn’t just you…I don’t see any wasps, hornets, or yellow-jackets in there yet either–dang it.

Hubs is starting to wonder if I put it together correctly. I’m starting to wonder if we wasted our money on a trap that doesn’t trap.

We’ll see though I guess. Fingers crossed we start to catch something…soon!

Ever used a similar trap? Did you love it or hate it? What do you use to get rid of bugs, critters, and other creepy-crawlies?

4 Thoughts on “Why, wasps?!”

  • I live in central Florida near the Atlantic coast. I just purchased the same trap as above. It’s been hanging for 3 days and nothing in it yet. I hung it only 3 to 4 feet from an active nest too. Paid damn near $15 for it. I believe I’ll try a homemade one next!.

    • Yea, we caught a lot of moths and flies but not a single wasp all year! Since we already have it, I’m planning to use a homemade bait (sugar and water?) and try it again in case that was the problem. But we’ll also be working on some other solutions this year as we already have wasps again! Good luck and I’d love to hear how your homemade one works!

  • Mine works great. You need to fill the top container with 75% apple juice 25% water and just 2-3 drops of liquid soap.
