Lately, I’ve heard a few things from friends and family (and some other readers we don’t know personally), that reading a home blog can be discouraging because it usually only shows the updates after they are finished, with no real mention for the failures that happen along the way. It can also be discouraging because it seems like the writers are always doing such fun projects to make their home more beautiful or functional.

Disclosure: These beautiful living rooms are not in my house. They are on my Pinterest page…which I’m sure you’re all surprised to learn, right?

Hubs and I try to be honest with you guys. But, we know that it’s easy to think just because our living room is clean in the photo of our new curtains that it’s always clean. It’s easy to think our kitchen doesn’t ever have ants or that our basement doesn’t ever have spiders. (Both of those are untrue, of course, much to my dismay.)

Still, we try to share our home-improvement failures with you guys when they happen. And they do happen. Trust us.

Want some posts to demonstrate we aren’t (ever) perfect? Check out this one in which Hubs spills red wax all over our carpet, this one in which we don’t get the curtains right on the first try, or this one in which I totally failed at staining the top of my nightstand.

But what about the things that aren’t really failures, but rather a lack of progress, or maybe just really un-fun projects…like fixing our broken trash barrel (which happened last weekend)? We don’t ever want you guys to think our lives as homeowners are perfect, pretty, let’s-happily-go-paint-something-perfect.

So, for the sake of honesty, here’s a glimpse into our house today:

Leaky Sink

Yep, that’s a picture of a leaky garbage disposal. Which is neither fun nor a particularly good-smelling project.

Now, we aren’t really sure where or why it’s leaking, but we know I found a small puddle down there after dinner last night and then we couldn’t find any drips. Awesome.

Hubs did, however, find the leak in his car that was causing this puddle of antifreeze on our garage floor:

So we’re one for two in the “catching leaks” department today. He even figured out how to replace the hose…although we have to wait for the part and maybe some help for it to get fixed, so we’re making do in the meantime by catching the drip with an empty box of fruit snacks.

Now we’re off to take care of these less fun, more dysfunctional household problems. Stay tuned for some more regularly scheduled blog posts to come!

Want to be honest with us about your home projects? What un-fun stuff are you working on lately? Any leaks to take care of?

2 Thoughts on “Unlucky Leaks, An Honest Post”

  • Seriously, we have had a leak in our fridge since we moved into our apartment that if we don’t put a bowl inside, the ice-maker leaks into our fridge and down to the drawers at the bottom. We’ve come home to drawers full of floating lunchmeats one too many times. Thanks for doing a post without a perfect ending, I think blogs paint too nice of a picture sometimes. I like knowing you’re real people.

    • Oh no! We had similar experiences at our apartment, although it wasn’t a leak in the fridge…it was with our Brita pitcher, so it was all our fault! Oops! I’m sure we’ll have similar experiences here, too someday. Thanks for the comment. We like knowing you guys are real people, too. 🙂
