John and Sherry over at Young House Love happen to be my unofficial blogging mentors. They don’t know me, and I’ve never met them, but I certainly feel I already know them because of how long I’ve been reading their awesome posts about fixing up their own home and raising their super funny and sweet, adorable daughter.

Plus, I feel I have some sort of kindred spirit with them because we have lots of things in common. They name their furniture. They love to spray paint things. They enjoy a good pun made into a fancy blog title. And they love thrifting.

Sherry also loves white rappers, and last week, she introduced me to this song,

thrift shop

Which I admit, is just silly enough for me to grin while watching it but too silly to make it onto my must-listen now playlist. However, the Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge that they issued to their readers was just too much to pass up so Hubs I and I set out to see what we could find.

(Bonus points for Hubs, who knows exactly the kind of fun I like to have and who isn’t afraid to take silly pictures with other people’s stuff inside a public place. Could he be any more dreamy?)

(Check out this post for the original idea, and this one, where all the participants are linking up)

Step 1. Take a picture with your “$20 in your pocket” at your thrift shop. We waited until we were inside since it was dark out. But you can see the name in the back.

Step 2. Photograph your finds. We found a sweet Comets shirt for Hubs, (KC’s indoor soccer team), for $1.25,

a metal pear for $1.98 that’s soon going to have a nice coat of spray paint and find himself on our mantle,

and a Christmas gift for someone that I couldn’t take a picture of because it will spoil the surprise.

We could have purchased a few other semi-awesome things, like a wooden and metal shelf that had some sort of potential to be rebuilt into something but we decided it was better to wait until we had a clear use for them in mind.

I also could have come home with this, but Hubs said I didn’t need it since I already have a very similar version here that we never play (because he doesn’t want to!).

Step 3. Find other items mentioned in the song and show them off. We didn’t buy these things, just marveled at what we could find. We found almost all the stuff he mentions in the song!

Here’s my all-pink outfit. Yes, I’m posing in the used lingerie section. I’m was feeling extra classy that night.

And some sweet house slippers that say “Best friends furever.”

Some awesome velcro shoes:

And these moccasins “that someone else been walkin’ in”:

With the plaid (and denim!) button-up shirt (your Grandpa’s style):

The knee/body board:

They even had a wet suit to wear with it!

Some suitcases!

Oh, and our own version of the big a$$ (and faux fur!) coat:

As a bonus, I also took a picture of these TV’s even though they aren’t in the song, because, man, was there a lot of them!

IMG_3491And there ya’ have it, the Loving Here version of the Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge, sponsored by the one and only Young House Love. We didn’t find a whole lot to buy this time out, but certainly found a whole bunch to marvel at!

What about you? Have you heard of this song? Do you read YoungHouseLove? Do you love to thrift? What’s the best (or worst) thing you’ve ever found!
