I’ve got pot on the mind today.

Or rather, pots, but that doesn’t rhyme as nice.

It does sound less controversial, though, so I’ll go with that I guess.

Correction: I’ve got some pots on my mind.

It’s 70 degrees and sunny where we are today, and I’m itching to get outside and do some work on our future garden.

We’ve never had a house or a yard before so this will be our first official garden as a couple. Luckily we both have experience with family gardens in the past, but we’ll be needing all the advice we can get for this first year of planting. I’m already making lists in my head of our favorite veggies but we need a lot of help with when and where and what to work on first. And where to get the best/cheapest starter plants.

In the meantime, I managed to keep my springtime-urges at bay by painting three little flower pots that will soon hold some fresh herbs in my kitchen window sill.

These little cuties were just basic terra-cotta pots that I saved (for free) from the trash during a clean out day at my old church. They were really old but looked like they had never been used.

They had some ancient sticky residue from a sticker or price tag or something, but I just sanded that off with fine sandpaper.

Then it was time to go to work with some leftover spray paint.

Don’t be afraid if the first coat looks like this:

The clay sucked in a lot of paint and it took about 4 thin coats to get a nice, smooth covering.

I had enough for two blue ones.

And of course, I needed a yellow one. Would you expect anything else?

Here’s how they turned out!

All ready for some dirt and then it’s thyme to plant.

See what I did there? See how clever I am? You can comment with your own best herb puns and I’ll promise to giggle at each one, ok?

Anyway, I know I’ll be looking for chives…and probably parsley. Not sure what should go in the other one. Suggestions?

Tell me your best tips for growing herbs. And what plants we should put on our must-plant garden list!

  • Very cute! I’m jealous that you have warm enough temps to get outside and spray paint! We have snow, cold and wet up here in good old Canada lol I’m also jealous that you have a spot in your kitchen to grow herbs! That’s definitely going to be a must have for me when we eventually buy a house 🙂
