An (Even) Nicer Nightstand

By | February 20, 2013

By now, I’m sure you guys have seen my nightstand transformation from this:

to this:

I definitely love this little guy’s design. Also, I found out via my aunt that it actually did belong to my great-grandparents. In fact, she remembers the exact furniture store where my Great-Grandma bought him and where he sat in the living room! So, yea, he’s a pretty cool piece to have.

However, I’m still tweaking the finished look, and over the past weekend, I decided to add a bit of blue for a subtle accent on the front of the drawer.

I (very non-scientifically) added some white paint to some leftover blue paint from the walls in our master bedroom to tone it down and make the look a little more shadowy than poppy.

Then I just quickly brushed a couple coats on the front surface of the drawer.

While that was drying, I decided to go totally crazy and add the same accent to the sides of the drawer so it shows when I open it.

Now, I realize I’m the only one who will ever see that, but it was a nice touch, so I went for it anyway. Plus, I had the leftover paint since I made sure I had mixed up plenty, and I didn’t want to waste it, right?

In the end, it turned out like this:

With the side of the drawer looking like this:

Oh, and yes, for you observant readers, yes, Hubs and I switched sides of the bed back to the sides we had at our apartment. We did pretty well for the first six months in the house, but in the end, we just prefer the old way better.

And this lets us hide Hubs’ boring old nightstand/end table on the side of the bed that isn’t seen while my spruced-up salvaged one gets to shine.

I like this blued-out version of the nightstand better already, but it’s still not finished since it will eventually get a coat of stain on the top surface. Here’s to baby steps, though, right?

Any of you guys making any small but super improvements to old pieces? Ever have a redesign project that seems to last forever because you just aren’t satisfied?

I need you to send some DIY fairy dust my way. I have a cute little end table that needs some TLC. But I don’t know what I’m doing. :p
